Wanda Imasuen
Wanda Imasuen is the mother of two boys and also helps raise her sister's four children. She's been organizing her entire life within her community for families and friends. Now she's privileged to be a part of a movement to bring about equality and justice for all people, as the Lead Organizer with FUREE (Families United for Racial and Economic Equality). In 2003, when Wanda was on public assistance, one of FUREE's organizers was doing outreach at the center and invited her to a FUREE campaign meeting. At that meeting she saw families and individuals like herself that were treated badly and humiliated by the very system that was supposed to help her. She knew she was in the right place and the rest is history. Wanda became a member/leader and served as the co-chair of the board of directors. She was the first member intern for six months and then received the New Voices Fellowship which allowed her to continue to work with FUREE on the Child Care Campaign, which ultimately won $4.5 million for group and family day care providers who had not received a raise in ten years.
