North Star Fund donor programs provide people at all giving levels the opportunity to learn about and support cutting edge community work across New York City's diverse neighborhoods. Through networking, special events, seminars, workshops, and visits with grantees, donors engage with their peers and neighbors to explore how grassroots leadership and organizing is creating a more just, democratic and sustainable world. In the process, people with resources to give but limited time feel more part of the community fabric that makes us all proud to call New York home.

North Star Fund's donor programs help individuals, family foundations and private foundation staff to be more strategic and focused with their philanthropic dollars. Meanwhile, they gain a mechanism to support the collective good in New York by experiencing innovative grassroots action, community-based organizing and leadership development on a range of issues.

What kind of New York do you want to live in? How can you help create it? Consider joining us for an upcoming event or program:

Donor Advised Services

Become a philanthropic partner of North Star Fund. You can consult with us on how to direct your gift to fit your priorities with maximum impact. Or you can make recommendations independently. Donor Advised Funds at North Star Fund enable donors to learn more about and advance causes and organizations in their issue or interest areas. Our donor advised programs also provide donors a means to network and engage with their peers, and receive expert advice while also meeting tax filing and other IRS deadlines. For more information about our donor advised programs, contact Executive Director, Hugh Hogan or call 212-620-9110, ext 104.

GENERous explorATIONS

GENERous exploRATIONS provides an opportunity for young funders (ages 18 – 40) with financial wealth to learn more about social change philanthropy and the different approaches that local communities take to solve problems, build power and create opportunity. Launched in partnership with Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, 21/64 of the Bronfman Philanthropies and Resource Generation, the GENERous exploRATIONS seminar series pilot kicked off in Spring 2007. If you are interested in participating in the fall 2007 series, contact Chandler Bazemore or call 212-620-9110, ext. 101.

Donor Diversification Project

In New York City, African-Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans comprise over 60% of the population and in the surrounding metropolitan areas more than 40%. People of color have longstanding traditions of philanthropic giving from generation to generation through churches, extended family networks and other institutions not formally associated with “philanthropy” in the U.S.

North Star Fund's Donor Diversification Project provides programming and events that engage people of color with financial wealth in the history of social change, where resources are needed today, how philanthropy has been practiced in different communities, and how those philanthropic traditions inform the future development and growth of North Star Fund.

Our Donor Diversification Project also partners with people of color affinity groups and professionals associations to provide programming content, workshops and arrange discussions with North Star Fund leaders and grantees as part of workplace giving programs and membership gatherings.

Special Events

North Star Fund special events, including our annual Community Gala, the North Star News Prize and our annual Holiday Concert, put celebration in our efforts to change the world, while also providing a means to help advance North Star Fund's social change mission.
