A good application should address the following:

Who are you?

  • Full name of the organization and your location
  • Geographic area and constituency served
  • Mission and Goals
  • How long you have been in existence
  • What you have achieved
  • Demonstration of strong community support for your group and/or project

Why is your organization, program or project necessary?

  • What needs will youmeet for the community?
  • How can you document the needs being met?
  • Why is your group uniquely suited for this endeavor?

What specific change do you anticipate?

  • How will your community be better off because of your group's work?
  • How will you concretely demonstrate improvement?
  • What is a realistic assessment of the resources you will need?

How will you evaluate your efforts?

  • A system should be developed by the stakeholders in the organization for tracking your progress. If you do this from the start, it will be much easier for you to respond to the requirements of various funders.

Have you prepared a comprehensive and realistic budget?

Do you have a year-long fundraising plan?

  • Events
  • Individual campaigns
  • Foundation, Government or Corporate support

Is your proposal formatted correctly and have you included all of the required paperwork?

  • Every foundation has a format. Find out what it is and have someone double-check to make sure you have followed it before submission.

REMEMBER:

  • Be sure to ask for enough money. Ask for what you need within the guidelines.
  • Make it easy to read, spell out acronyms and avoid jargon (words only familiar to the people working in your organization or living in the community)
  • Double check your financial information. Make sure it adds up and is consistent throughout the document.
  • Let your proposal rest at least 24 hours before submitting it.
