- In New York, more than one out of five families with children live below the federal poverty one.
- Over 9,000 families with over 18,000 children live in the city's shelter system at any one time.
- Over 1.5 million New Yorkers who are 16 years of age or older are out of school and do not have a high school diploma.
- Non-citizens are three times more likely than citizens to lack health insurance and are less likely to seek medical care, including emergency care.
North Star Fund gets dollars to the front lines where community members' are living the problem behind the statistics. And because they're living it, they have indispensable knowledge on how to fix it.
North Star Fund knows that when grassroots community groups are
provided with money and resources, no matter how small, they invest in
generating long-lasting change--change that expands opportunity, that
enlivens our democracy, and that creates a more vibrant, prosperous
city for us all.
We fund groups dealing with tough and complex issues: immigrants rights, the well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS, reproductive rights, workers' rights, peace and anti-militarism, civil rights, environmental justice, housing and homelessness--to name a few. We have decades of involvement in every corner of the city, and are consistently able to find the most effective, innovative grassroots in the field.
North Star Fund focuses on the groups challenging the root causes of social injustice. We have found that's the most effective way to effect change that endures. Through North Star Fund, activists receive funding to cover the fundamentals of organizing--trainings, meetings, phone bills, websites, printing, salaries, office rent. And they get technical assistance and training on subjects such as working with the media, lobbying elected officials, building sustainable organizations.
