Act Now on Haitian Earthquake
Like so many of us, we are shocked and saddened by the scope of devastation in Haiti following yesterday's 7.0 earthquake that struck near Port Au Prince, the Haitian capital. North Star Fund grantee Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees is quickly organizing a relief mission to Haiti in collaboration with one of their partners. This Democracy Now story on the earthquake, featuring author Edwidge Danticat and journalist Kim Ives, reminds us that alongside the devastation of this natural disaster, has been decades of politically disastrous policies, often at the hands of U.S. policymakers afraid of real democracy on the island. Haitian refugees also face discriminatory enforcement of U.S. immigration law.
