It’s summer, and we’re starting to plan events for this fall 2018! Let’s take a moment to look back at event highlights from the first half of the year, #ICYMI:
In February, North Star Fund held our first event in the Hudson Valley. Hudson Collective at Dobbs Ferry provided a lively space for us to make our entrance into the region. We were joined by Diana Sanchez, an organizer at North Star Fund grantee Yonkers Sanctuary Movement, who shared with us the horrific impact of ICE on her family and community, and how a grant from North Star Fund is helping strengthen the organizing needed to shift the current climate.
We had a second jam-packed event in Kingston this spring featuring the work of Diana Saguilán from Worker Justice Center of New York . As a young child translating for her parents, Diana began to understand early on the injustices facing the immigrant community. Today, that experience has transformed her leadership in extraordinary ways.
Of course the Community Gala happened in a big way on April 17, raising over a million dollars for community organizing. See the highlights here:
In early May we partnered with Lady M for “Sweet Justice.” The happy hour event was was an intimate gathering (with cake!) to thank our Community Gala host committee as well as our newest donors. Together we celebrated a successful gala, our recent Giving Project and the support of new friends.
Finally in May we hosted our first North Star Fund Supper at Colors. With the family-style menu designed by Oxalis NYC, we began each course with a brief presentation by a New York food justice organizer and a question for the table. The supper proved—and deliciously so—that no matter who you are or where you’re from, food connects us all. Someone please pass the monkfish!
For those of you now suffering from #FOMO, no need to worry. North Star Fund is always grateful for opportunities to build community with you. Make sure you are subscribed to our emails or follow us on Facebook and we’ll see you at the next one.
