North Star Fund made a $5,000 Rapid Response grant to the Newburgh LGBTQ+ Center for organizing against hate crimes in the Hudson Valley.

Newburgh LGBTQ+ Center

The Newburgh LGBTQ+ Center seeks to organize the community in the Mid-Hudson Valley to build power and advocate for the needs of youth, elders, trans folk, and anyone identifying on the LGBTQIA and GNC spectrum.

Why this?

Over the last six to nine months, there has been an escalation of homophobic incidents in the town of New Paltz and the city of Poughkeepsie. The Newburgh LGBTQ+ Center heard of these incidents through social media and exchanged information with their communities. Now, they will transform those online conversations to:

  • Address the lack of accountability coming from police when it comes to these incidents
  • Build power and alignment with impacted community members
  • Build a community response protocol to handle acts of hate when they occur

Why now?

The recent uptick in hate crimes against the LGBTQ community and the lack of official response has created an urgency around organizing to protect community members in the Hudson Valley.
