Michael Waterman’s service on North Star Fund’s board grew from his family’s dedication to social change efforts. His mother emigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines as a political activist fighting the Marcos regime, and his father, an immigration attorney, started a family foundation which supported groups working on social and economic justice issues.
After the passing of Michael’s father in 2007, the family decided to convert the family foundation to a donor-advised fund, and spend down the remaining capital. An advisor recommended North Star Fund as a foundation that shared his family’s values and aspirations. As Michael puts it, “It was a natural fit.”
Michael is co-founder of Olo Acupuncture, which is committed to making health and wellness services accessible to more New Yorkers. He is a founding board member of TIGRA Promotions, Inc. a benefit corporation that promotes socially-responsible products and services to transnational families.
“North Star Fund represents an important nexus for good people doing good work. It’s where social justice activism comes together in this city.”
