The NYC Capacity Building Collaborative is accepting applications for Defending and Expanding Our Safety Net, a two-day convening in this summer, with a follow-up session in the fall to review the integration of new practices. At least one senior-level staff member with decision-making power within the social service organization is encouraged to attend, and the session is open to frontline staff as well.   

Service providers are an essential part of the fabric of low-income communities. They include private and publicly-funded life-sustaining services, such as health care facilities, soup kitchens, legal assistance programs, and daycares. With the threat of proposed cuts and attacks on the social safety net looming overhead, the role of direct service providers will be even more critical in this coming period. The service provider’s client base are also often members of grassroots community-based organizations throughout the five boroughs. This convening will engage participants in a collective analysis and discussion about the key role that services providers could play in this new landscape—one that complements the roles of organizing, advocacy, and public policy efforts.

We will work with direct service providers to address the following key questions:

  • How do we understand the times that we are in and the implications of Trump’s Administration on our communities?
  • How can direct service providers advance the need for services while amplifying the long-term solutions that best serve communities in New York?
  • What would it look like for organizations with different tactics and strategies—direct service providers and organizations that do organizing—to partner with similar goals of systemic change?

This training will be conducted by Helena Wong, Lynn Lewis, and Priscilla Gonzalez.

Expectations and Readiness

This program is open to two representatives from your organization, one of whom must be a staff member with decision-making power within your organization. Applicants must commit to participating in the full program as detailed above and complete a pre-engagement survey designed to help the convening trainers better understand your organization. Applicants should be ready and committed to invest the time necessary to complete this change process, which involves asking challenging questions, interrogating assumptions, and a willingness to engage in a process of self-examination and reflection.

Eligibility

This training is free to grantees of the Andrus Family Fund, Brooklyn Community Foundation, Cricket Island Foundation, Daphne Foundation, Korean American Community Foundation, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, New York Foundation, New York Women's Foundation, North Star Fund, Scherman Foundation, and Stonewall Community Foundation.

Monday, June 5. Space is limited. Applicants will be notified of acceptance into the training by Friday, May 12, 2017.
