North Star Fund Announces New Executive Director
Jennifer Ching, former community organizer, leader and Skadden fellow, to join NYC grassroots foundation
February 2, 2017, New York, NY—Today, New York City community foundation North Star Fund announced Jennifer Ching as incoming executive director. For over 35 years, North Star Fund has supported the movement for social justice through donor engagement, grants, and programs for grassroots community organizations based in the New York City area. Ms. Ching joins North Star Fund after years of dedicated service and remarkable leadership at Queens Legal Services where she worked with a number of North Star Fund grantees throughout the five boroughs.
“Jenn has worked with communities directly affected by oppression and inequity to change the daily realities they face. This aligns with North Star Fund’s values and history,” said Nisha Atre, chair of the North Star Fund board of directors. “We hope our grantees, donors, and supporters share our excitement as we usher in a new phase of visionary grassroots philanthropy.”
Ms. Ching was integral in shaping Queens Legal Services vision of legal services and community organizing working in tandem to advance immigrant rights, anti-racism, and economic and housing justice. As a Skadden fellow, she founded New Jersey’s first immigrant workers’ rights project supporting low-wage workers in the hidden informal economies of the suburbs. Prior to that, Ms. Ching litigated the first case with the ACLU and Center for Constitutional Rights to obtain government information on torture and illegal detention at Guantánamo.
“Given what’s happened in just the first weeks of the new administration, it’s clear that we have to fight even harder and smarter to protect marginalized and vulnerable communities,” said Jennifer Ching, incoming North Star Fund executive director. “I am honored to lead North Star Fund in answering that call.”
A woman of color and daughter of immigrants, Ms. Ching’s and her family’s firsthand experiences of racism, xenophobia, and an unjust economic system inform her work in the sector. For instance, as director of New York Appleseed, Ms. Ching advanced critical public policy in the region for financial literacy, investment, and health access in immigrant communities.
"The support of North Star Fund and philanthropic organizations is more critical than ever as we fight to keep our communities as safe and organized as possible," said Fahd Ahmed, DRUM - Desis Rising Up and Moving executive director and North Star Fund grantee. "With Jenn's experience and vision, we are excited for an even deeper partnership with a foundation that understands the importance of change from the roots up."
"Jenn has fought on the front lines alongside New York City's most critical social justice battles," said Afua Atta-Mensah, Community Voices Heard executive director and North Star Fund grantee. "We are excited to see North Star Fund's leadership reflect the communities and values of grantees and look forward to driving meaningful change together.”
Ms. Ching brings years of experience in donor relations and a strong track record in cultivating key relationships and giving campaigns throughout her career.
“North Star Fund and our passionate community of donors are committed to moving resources to frontline communities as attacks on basic rights and fairness escalate,” said Richard Burns, North Star Fund interim executive director. “With Jenn at the helm, I am confident that North Star Fund will grow its impact not only in funding community organizing in New York City but in the larger philanthropic sector.”
For 38 years, North Star Fund has helped make democracy happen in New York City through a diverse network of donor activists to support grassroots community organizing for solutions to the greatest problems facing our city. By putting resources into the hands of those directly impacted by injustice and providing long-term support, North Star Fund helps causes to become social movements from the roots up.
