On June 25, 2011 North Star Fund hosted its third LGBTQ Community Brunch. Donors came together to learn about the ground-breaking work and the profound impact that groups we support have in New York City’s LGBTQ communities.
Lule Demmissie, co-host of the brunch, supporter of North Star, and former board member, moderated a conversation with Karina Claudio, lead organizer of Make the Road New York’s LGBTQ Justice Project and Emerson Brisbon, leadership development coordinator at Fierce.
These organizations represent the kind of groundbreaking work that North Star Fund supports. Make the Road New York’s LGBTQ Justice Project (formerly Gays and Lesbians of Bushwick Empowered) organizes LGBTQ people of color in the low income neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn. The group works to end institutional homophobia and harassment, isolation, and invisibility. FIERCE builds the leadership and power of LGBTQ youth of color in New York City through youth-led campaigns, leadership development programs, and cultural expression through arts and media.
And thanks to Tamiko Beyer for reading her beautiful and inspirational poem about Marsha P. Johnson.
Through the generosity of activists donors North Star is able to support organizations making change in our community. Our donors are involved in many different ways, including participating in our grantmaking work and planning donor programs. What They’re Saying…
Brunch attendees share what they thought of the event.
“North Star Fund gets community organizing because it’s truly a community organization. The brunch was a great opportunity to meet friends of the foundation—staff, board members, donor partners, and grantees alike—and hear about how they’re all working together toward equity and justice in NYC.”
—Jarrett Lucas, Stonewall Community Foundation
“Today’s event was very well organized. The friend-raiser created productive yet intimate conversations.”
—CK Chung, Seedco
North Star Fund would like to thank the host committee: Lule Demmissie, Jason Franklin, Kian Goh, Hugh Hogan, Rickke Mananzala, Lloyd Martinez, and Shiv Paul for their leadership and support in putting this event together.
