From Our Board Chair
What does home mean to you? That’s a question we asked ourselves this past year as we brought our community back together in various ways, including our Community Gala and our expanded Weekends of Organizing. For me, home is a place where I’m truly myself—with my loved ones, safe and free.
North Star Fund has been a joyful and powerful political home for me since my early days as an activist fighting for reproductive rights and addressing violence against women.
Over the years, I’ve been thrilled to see our community support so many homegrown movements fighting for a more just New York. This past year, we awarded over 200 grants to dozens of grassroots groups throughout the City and the Hudson Valley!

Thank you for supporting the hundreds of organizers whose work we have the privilege of sharing here. Together, we are the beautiful and powerful conscience of New York. We’re learning through our collective struggle and—through both hard-felt losses and hard-fought victories—building a New York in our vision.

Our #PowerUp community includes individuals, families and foundations making a range of multi-year commitments in the form of monthly, three, five or even ten-year gifts.
#PowerUp gifts enable us to provide our grassroots grantees with predictable streams of revenue—something all the more critical in these uncertain times. This past year, thanks to our community and for the first time in North Star Fund’s history, we made three-year grants to more than 50 groups.
In the coming year, we plan to bring even more groups into our multi-year cohorts. This is our vision: to provide even the newest, most emergent organizing formations in New York with support they can count on—so they can plan, fight and win.

Thank You To Our Donors
We extend a huge thank you to the nearly one thousand donors who made a gift to North Star Fund this year.
There’s a place for everyone to be part of the North Star Fund community—and with the gifts we’ve received this year ranging from one dollar to $2 million—there’s a place for everyone to be involved as a North Star Fund donor.
The median gift our donors made this year was $54. Half the gifts we received were over this number and half of all the donations we received were under $54. Your gifts combine together to have the greatest impact in supporting grassroots organizing.
In these uncertain and unprecedented times, every gift counts.
We’re experiencing the same overall trend of fewer donations as our fellow social justice organizations after a wave of increased giving for racial justice in 2020. So we are especially grateful that so many in our community have shown staying power. This is essential as we increase multi-year grants and remain committed to growing our support of Black-led organizing throughout New York City and the Hudson Valley.
The impact of your gift
As a donor, your contribution supports at least a dozen different justice movements—and our activist-led Community Funding Committees ensure that grants reach organizations you are familiar with, as well as groups you likely don’t know about yet. Your donation to North Star Fund powers hundreds of grants for millions of dollars, from Albany to Staten Island.
Your gift supports delivery workers, domestic workers, incarcerated New Yorkers, students and farmers—there are literally hundreds of settings where people are organizing for their lives and communities. You can support them all with your single gift.
