Though we could not be in the same room, we are so grateful for the chance to gather with you, our North Star Fund community, for the 2021 North Star Fund unGala.

For a few moments in the afternoon before the event (just before the Chauvin verdict was announced), we considered canceling our unGala. We felt the profound emotions of the moment—recognizing all that the verdict could and would not bring as we continue to fight for real justice. We decided to hold space with our community to honor the organizing that made the verdict possible, and the work that moves us forward. Hundreds of community members agreed, and joined us online for the event.

Want to be inspired by Frederick Douglass Honorees Rise Up Kingston, Worker’s Justice Project and NYS Youth Leadership Council? Want to hear Martha Redbone sing “Someday We’ll All Be Free” or catch Staceyann Chin’s reading of the Marge Piercy poem, “The Low Road?” Here’s the full program:

or, you can view the entire unGala program on the event website. Or peek at the gallery from our virtual photobooth this year.

Special thanks to our hosts Ali Ahn and William Jackson Harper, and heaps of gratitude to Voices of A People’s History of the United States and DJ DeLaCeiba.

And most of all, thanks to our community.

Through the 2021 unGala we raised over $540,000 for grassroots organizing led by people of color building real and lasting power in New York City and the Hudson Valley.
