Grantee Training, Hudson Valley: Intro to Story-based Strategy

July 20, 2019 @ 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

A group of three people talking in a small group in a workshop

Although all of us are natural born storytellers, telling stories to advance social justice is a little different. To do “justice storytelling,” we are often telling stories that have to counter powerful misinformation about our community and the issues we work on.

Our opponents have the advantage that their story is widely accepted as “the story,” no matter how unrealistic their stories are. When we tell stories, they have to be short, credible, powerful and they need to move people to action.

This is an introductory workshop about how to think about storytelling for advocacy. We won’t work on individual storytelling as much as thinking about your organization’s story-based strategy:

  • What elements need to be present as we tell stories to help people understand the issue better?
  • What are the narratives that show the real stakes of our issue?

We’ll work mostly in small groups — we encourage you to send leaders who want to talk through your organization’s strategic communications issues together.

Accessibility: Lunch and snacks will be provided. Please let us know when you register if you have food restrictions or other accessibility requests. The space is wheelchair accessible. If you have accessibility requests/questions before you wish to register, please reach out to us at comms-team@northstarfund.org.

Note: This workshop is only open to current grantees of North Star Fund who are based in the Hudson Valley.
