Supporting Tenants Who Organize: A CAAAV Training for Chinatown Allies

Parts of this training will be conducted in Mandarin, with interpretation into English.

Chinatown tenants have been organizing with CAAAV since the early 2000s to fight greedy and negligent landlords, protect the neighborhood from gentrification, and create a more just future where safe, stable, and affordable housing will be secure for working-class immigrant communities. This spring, in 2019, tenants have a tremendous opportunity to achieve major legislative and policy wins– but it will take strong, steady organizing & the collective effort of many.

This training is for Chinese-speaking allies of all skill levels, and any other folks who want to support tenant organizing in Chinatown. Topics covered will include:

– Stories from Chinatown tenant leaders about gentrification, organizing & their hopes for the neighborhood.
– Chinese language vocabulary to describe gentrification and housing issues.
– Pro-tenant housing legislation on the table in Albany in 2019, and why it matters to our working-class tenant community.
– How allies can support Chinatown tenants in organizing and lobbying for legislative wins, material wins, and more.

The training space is accessible. The nearest subway stop is the East Broadway F train stop (~2 blocks), but the nearest accessible subway stop is the Delancey Street / Essex Street stop on the J,Z, and F trains (~5 blocks).

This ally training was inspired by the ally / solidarity trainings our comrades at Hate Free Zones Queens ran to support the fight against Amazon in Long Island City!
